Recovering Movies

In the unfortunate event of an iShowU HD crash, or if a recording "goes bad", iShowU HD 2.1.2 or above can perform a recovery.  Normally this process is entirely automatic, but if it's not doing what you expect, you can attempt a forced recovery using the following process.

Very Important Note

These instructions ask you to backup files. Please ensure you do so - because the same instructions will request that you delete the source files.

A Six Step Plan

  1. You *must* use the latest build (unless you've been specifically told otherwise). Download it again to make sure, because beta builds are often updated.
  2. Backup the entire /Users//Movies/iShowU HD folder - keep it safe.  Include all the temporary files as well.  This folder has finished movies in it as well as partially complete movies.  In a moment  we'll clear it out so we can clearly see what is recovered in the next steps. Backup anything in here so you can get to it later if this does not work
  3. After you've backed this up, delete all movies from this folder (see? told you to backup!).  Don't delete the contents of the Temporary folder though.
OK - go get a coffee!
Our intended result at this point:
  1. An empty "/Users//Movies/iShowU HD" folder.
  2. A bunch of files in "/Users//Movies/iShowU HD/Temporary" - a whole lot of bulk files, db files, journals etc.
With backups done, we can proceed.
  1. We want to remove all the recordings from iShowU HD itself (we've already removed the files but we need to tell HD they are gone as well). To do this, with iShowU HD closed, delete the file /Users//Library/Application Support/iShowU HD/iShowURecordings.xml.
  2. Start iShowU HD. It should begin a recovery process on all of your temporary files.
Get a coffee or seven. It'll take a while.
Once done, you should have a set of recovered movies in the Users//Movies/iShowU HD/ folder.
